County Executive Leggett’s Talking Points at the Asian American Heritage Night

Rosborough Culture Arts Center

409 Russell Avenue, Gaithersburg

As prepared

Good evening! It gives me great pleasure to be here with you today to recognize the achievements of Asian Americans in Montgomery County.

I want to thank Ms. Grace Yao, the Asian American Chamber of Commerce, the Chinese Culture Institute, Asbury Methodist Village and all of the organizers for all of your work in bringing this beautiful event together to recognize Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

What is great about our County is that residents of all backgrounds, heritage, and religions can come together in the spirit of friendship and mutual understanding to recognize the diversity that lies within our County.

As you will see through the performances today, the Asian Pacific Americans is one of the most vibrant communities in the county. Now the fastest growing group in the County, residents of Asian descent have been key to the economic, social, civic, and cultural growth and strength of our County.

Due to the strength of the Asian Pacific American community in Montgomery County, I am very happy to announce that we will return to our Sister City in China this October and we will also travel to South Korea to formalize a new Sister City agreement with Daejeon Metropolitan City.

I hope that you will join Office of Community Partnerships Director Bruce Adams and I on this exciting trip to strengthen cultural, economic and social ties to South Korea. If you are interested in learning more about this trip or to serve on our planning committee, please speak to Diane Vu, Asian American Liaison.

I would like to invite the planners on stage along with the elected officials/dignitaries in the room to capture a group picture as I present a proclamation in honor of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month.

Congratulations on a wonderful event. I look forward to continuing our work together in making Montgomery County the most welcoming community in the nation.
