County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Seneca Valley High School Groundbreaking

 19401 Crystal Rock Drive, Germantown

As prepared

Good morning and thank you for coming out to celebrate the Seneca Valley High School groundbreaking.

I always say, I like groundbreakings; but I love ribbon-cuttings even more. As County Executive, I have made it a priority to provide residents with high-quality public facilities, especially libraries, recreation centers and, of course, schools. Together we have cost-effectively built more necessary facilities than any other previous administration.

And I do mean necessary. The populations of Germantown and nearby Clarksburg are growing rapidly and our schools must keep pace.

Seneca Valley, Northwest and Clarksburg High Schools are expected to exceed capacity by more than 1,400 students by the end of the six-year capital planning period in 2020.

The new Seneca Valley High School will have a planned capacity of more than 2,400 students. This new capacity will accommodate a large portion of the expected student growth in Germantown and Clarksburg.

I want to thank Senator Nancy King and Councilmember Craig Rice, other members of the County Council and the Board of Education for their unwavering support for our local schools and this specific project.

I also want to thank Superintendent Dr. Jack Smith and Dr. Marc Cohen, Seneca Valley High School Principal for the work they do to ensure the continued success of our student and for inviting me here to be part of this great occasion.

Thank you all for celebrating with us today!
