County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Burtonsville Commercial Revitalization Program Celebration

15500 Old Columbia Pike, Burtonsville

As prepared

Thank you, Clarence; and good morning Burtonsville!

It is my pleasure to be here today, along with Councilmembers Tom Hucker and Nancy Floreen, State Senator Craig Zucker, and State Delegates Anne Kaiser, Eric Luedtke, and Pam Queen.

We are here to celebrate the completion of this phase of the Burtonsville Commercial Revitalization Program.

Not long ago, this portion of Old Columbia Pike had less appealing store fronts.

I know this well, because I frequently drive past this area on the way to and from work; and I also shop in this area, enjoying the restaurants along the way.

Previously, several car lifts lined the front of the Burtonsville Automotive Service building, and many of the shopping centers and businesses were showing their age.

Now, we have beautiful new façades and a vibrant Burtonsville Village Center. This makes it easier for all of us to appreciate the great businesses located here.

This impressive transformation is possible thanks to the dedicated work of our DHCA staff – in particular, their Neighborhood Revitalization team.

They worked in collaboration with property owners Katz & Company Property Management, Lynn Martins and Karen Leach of Seibel’s, and Site Realty Group.

The continued revitalization of Burtonsville and the entire East County is an important priority.

Each completed phase and project brings us a step closer to realizing the full potential of this area.

As many of you know, we are planning a BRT station nearby. And, Burtonsville was recently approved as an Enterprise Zone.

All these steps make the Burtonsville area even more attractive for investment and development.

Our Façade Improvement Program supports healthy, sustainable communities and a strong and vibrant economy, here in Burtonsville and around the County.

These elements make Montgomery County a desirable place to live, work, raise a family, start or grow a business and have fun!

Thank you and please enjoy all of today’s festivities!
