County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Summer Job Fair News Conference

East County Community Recreation Center

3310 Gateshead Manor Way, Silver Spring

As prepared

Good morning!

We are here at the East County Community Recreation Center to promote the hundreds of job opportunities that are available with the Montgomery County Department of Recreation this summer.

The recreation department hires more than three thousand seasonal employees annually; and this summer, the department still needs to fill about one thousand of those jobs.

Positions include summer camp directors; camp counselors; swim instructors; lifeguards; and more. These jobs are for people looking for seasonal work, including teens; college students or recent graduates; teachers; retirees; and stay-at-home moms and dads.

If you are looking for a summer job; you’re at least 15 years old; you’re enthusiastic and enjoy working with young people, then plan to attend the recreation department’s Summer Camp and Job Fair being held righthere this Saturday, February 17th, from noon – 3 p.m.

You will also be able to learn about available positions in aquatics; summer camps; therapeutic recreation; and Teen Works – our youth employment program.

The pay is competitive. It begins at $11.50 an hour and goes up to $25 an hour depending on the position and the applicant’s experience.

At Saturday’s Job Fair, there will be speed-interviews for those who are qualified, so be sure and bring your resume and your A-Game.  Vicki Kane, manager of County-wide programs, is going to tell us more about the specific types of summer jobs available, the skills that are important for each job, and, of course, how to apply.

Thank you!
