County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Strathmore Construction Downbeat

Strathmore Music Center

5301 Tuckerman Lane, North Bethesda

As prepared

Good morning!

It is a pleasure to be here.

It has been a little more than 13 years since the Music Center at Strathmore opened its doors on February 5, 2005.

Since then, there have been more than 160 performances here each year; and the Music Center hosts nearly 250,000 visitors annually.

This facility is acclaimed for its stellar acoustics; and attendance still averages an opening-year capacity of about 86 percent on most nights – that is considered remarkable for a Concert Hall that is 13 years old.

This world-class center was constructed with County, State and private funds.

And just last year, the County funded a four million-dollar Mansion Restoration, which sealed the building, and will sustain it for years.

Now the addition of this pavilion to the Music Center will add more dining space, 200 more seats, and a long-awaited and much-needed escalator. Construction begins today and is expected to take 12 to 15 months.

We want to acknowledge the Center’s founding partner -The Baltimore Symphony; and its resident partners -The National Philharmonic, Washington Performing Arts, Levine Music, CityDance and interPLAY.

Along with the groups I just mentioned, Montgomery County is proud to be a vital partner in the growth of this special home for the arts. It has been a wonderful and productive partnership.

Thank you!
