Speech and Testimony

County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Gun Control Rally

Council Office Building, 100 Maryland Avenue, Lobby, Rockville

As prepared

The surviving victims of gun violence have spoken. The people have spoken. They are demanding we stop the plague of gun violence from affecting another family by introducing common sense gun laws of weapons that were made for war. The nation’s president and the Congress must respond as we here in the County have done.

As a Vietnam War-era veteran and supporter of the 2nd Amendment, I stand with the law enforcement community, victims, trauma surgeons, legislators and the majority of Americans in calling for the implementation of sensible gun laws – not further exacerbating the problem by enacting the foolish and dangerous idea of arming educators.

We cannot even come up with the funding to give them pencils; but we will somehow magically generate the revenue for bullets?

It is time we listen to the victims. It is time that sane and sensible gun laws were seen for what they are – public safety measures designed to protect police officers and the community at large.

And it is time that people in this region and across this country act, not only as participants in marches – as we have seen many brave students do in the recent past – but also with their votes.

The power is in our hands. It is well past time we use it.
