County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Wheaton Claridge Local Park Reopening

11901 Claridge Road, Wheaton,

As prepared

Good morning! What a beautiful spring day to reopen and celebrate this park in Wheaton.

Big things are happening in Wheaton. You may have noticed the cranes and construction signs that are all part of the new Wheaton that is just ahead.

We are in the process of rebuilding Wheaton, and we are not doing it with just a new 14-story office building. Have you seen the library and community center that are going up along Georgia Avenue?

Still, it takes more than new buildings to revitalize a community. What goes around those buildings is just as important. Places like the new Town Plaza that will be part of the Downtown Wheaton revitalization project and places like Wheaton Claridge Local Park. Places where people can gather and connect.

This park has been a gathering place for the community since the 1950s. Many memories have been created here and now -- thanks to this reopening --- more families can make their own memories at this park.

There is no doubt that our beautiful parks—there are over 400 parks in Montgomery County-- help make the quality of life here so stellar.

This local park with its new amenities and layout provides our residents with a convenient place to enjoy and observe nature, to grill with family and friends, and to hike.

It is a relaxing spot to escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It is also a community gathering space for activities, events and meetings.  What could be better than attending a meeting with this wooded setting as your backdrop?

I am delighted to celebrate the reopening of Wheaton – Claridge Local Park and all these new amenities. I hope to see you all out on the trails exploring and having fun, and I look forward to the future of Wheaton, which is bright.

Thank you!
