County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the News Conference with Delegate Ana Sol Gutierrez on Salvadoran Festival

2424 Reedie Drive, Wheaton (Mid-County Services Center)

As prepared

Good morning and thank you for joining us here today!

We are here to announce and invite folks to come and celebrate with us at the 7thAnnual Salvadoran-American Day Festival here in the center of Wheaton, Sunday, August 7, from 12 to 6 p.m.

It will be a day of celebration of the numerous contributions made by Salvadoran-Americans throughout the United States; and the Salvadoran-American community here in Montgomery County.

The Salvadoran community represents more than 70,000 residents and contributes to the sustained growth of the County's economic and multicultural fabric.

This is also another important reason why we have an excellent Sister Cities program with Morazán, El Salvador.  We have a special and strong relationship and connection between both communities.

The Salvadoran-American community is entrepreneurial (as we see the many different businesses and good food that we enjoy in the County) and emphasizes love of family, community and country.

This is what you will find at this festival next Sunday here in Wheaton.  We are proud to partner with COSTA on this community festival as we will enjoy great food, music, performances, artisanal products from El Salvador and Latin America.

Also we are proud of the partnership with my friend and State Delegate, Ana Sol Gutierrez, who is an excellent example and representative of the Salvadoran-American community here in the County and in the United States.

Ana Sol Gutierrez, thank you for your work and dedication and for adding the health and community service fair to the festival.

Our various County Departments and agencies - 311, DHHS, Recreation, Police Department, Fire and Rescue Service, Libraries and Gilchrist Center - will all be here along with partners such as Mobile Med, Kaiser Pemanente and more to provide services to all of our residents to include free confidential health screenings for: blood pressure; cholesterol; diabetes; cancer; HIV; and dental health.

We will also have our Board of Elections to help answer any questions and to register people to vote and promote our civic responsibility.

And, we will also have the Salvadoran consulate providing Temporary Protected Status services and renewal at our Mid-County Regional Service facility (across).  We know that this is a tremendous benefit for many folks in our community and we are working with the Salvadoran Consulate and Embassy on these efforts.

Please come and join us! Thank you!

Now, I want to introduce Delegate Ana Sol Gutierrez to say a few words.
