Whetstone Elementary School, 19201 Thomas Farm Road, Gaithersburg
As prepared
Good morning everyone. It’s great to be here for Walk to School Day! I hope everyone enjoyed the walk!
You are all part of something really big today. You had hundreds of students walking with you at Whetstone Elementary. But there are also students at thousands of other schools in Montgomery County, across the United States, and even around the world who are walking together to school today.
I bet it’s kind of fun to imagine all those students, in so many other places, walking together to school, just like you.
Everyone here today wants you to have fun walking, but all of us also want you to be safe. So today, I want to practice with you the safe way to cross the street. And then, I want you to go home tonight and practice it with your parents. Will you do that?
OK. Maybe you already know the safe way to cross the street, but let me describe it before we practice it together.
Before you cross the street, I want you to STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. But, when you LOOK, I need you to look Left-Right and then Left again. By doing these steps, you’ll know whether it’s safe to cross the street.
So, to put it all together, you want to STOP; LOOK LEFT-LOOK RIGHT-AND LOOK LEFT AGAIN; and LISTEN.
Staying right where you are, let’s all say these words together and do the motions together.
Here we go. Let’s STOP; LOOK LEFT-LOOK RIGHT-AND LOOK LEFT AGAIN; and LISTEN.
Great! Now, I want you to go home and practice this with your parents tonight. Raise your hand if you will do that.
Terrific! Who can call out the steps for how you’ll tell your parents the safe way to cross the street?
I’m really proud of all of you – and, I know your parents will be glad to practice it with you, too.
Again, thank you for walking together so nicely today. And, thank you for practicing the safe way to cross the street. Each one of you is a very special person and everyone here wants you all to be safe.
