County Executive Leggett’s Remarks at the Tribute to Leadership and Services - Democratic Club of Leisure World

3310 North Leisure World Boulevard

Crystal Ballroom, Clubhouse 1, Silver Spring

It is my pleasure to congratulate the Democratic Club of Montgomery County on reaching an incredible milestone!

Over the past 50 years, the Democratic Club has been an integral part of strengthening our system of government through efforts to educate, connect, and involve people more fully in the democratic process.

Under the leadership of people like Delegate Hank Heller; President Emile Milne, and his predecessors Presidents Shirley Henderson and Jay Harding; and our dearly departed Senator Len Teitelbaum, the club:

  • Has continued to grow, expanding its reach throughout the County.

  • Has expanded its advocacy efforts at the State and County level.

  • Has been the largest political club in the state and is one of the most active in terms of voter turnout in the state.

  • Has mobilized members to register voters and to organize volunteers for phone-banking and canvassing in support of Democratic candidates for local and State offices.

  • Has organized educational events on immigration reform and the Affordable Care Act in addition to a series of seminars titled “Montgomery County 101”, whose topics included poverty, domestic violence, changing demographics and affordable housing and how members can get involved in various causes important to the values of the Democratic Party.

  • Spearheaded a post-guard initiative, led by Martha Robinson, to help secure President Obama’s reelection for his second term in 2012.

The Democratic Club’s efforts to involve people more fully in the governmental process have served to strengthen our democracy; and that has never been more crucial than it is today.

I salute the club on its commitment to serving the citizens of Montgomery County and I look forward to continuing to work with its leadership on the important challenges ahead.

Thank you!
