EDUCATION IN MONTGOMERY: TEAM EFFORT … Montgomery County Superintendent of Schools Joshua Starr (speaking) on Nov. 15 joined Montgomery County Council President Valerie Ervin and Doug Prouty, president of the Montgomery County Education Association, to reaffirm the united effort required to keep Montgomery County Public Schools among the top school systems in the nation. The County Council issued a proclamation declaring Nov. 13-19 American Education Week in Montgomery County, although Dr. Starr suggested the modification of “Every week is Education Week.”
Joining regional leaders at the fall launch for the regional Street Smart pedestrian safety campaign, Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett announced new curb markings along the Piney Branch corridor to indicate where it IS and ISN’T safe for pedestrians to cross the street. The markings, the first in Maryland, are a joint project with the Maryland Department of Transportation. During his remarks, Leggett discussed the success of his Pedestrian Safety Initiative that is reducing the number and severity of pedestrian collisions. See Leggett’s full remarks.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier (not shown) regarding the usefulness and success of youth curfew laws in Prince George's and Washington D.C. in protecting underage juveniles from being victims or becoming involved in late-night crime. County Executive Ike Leggett have proposed a similar youth curfew in Montgomery County.
The local holiday season will kick off on Saturday, November 19 when the 14th Annual Montgomery County Thanksgiving Parade steps off at 10 a.m. from Ellsworth Drive and Fenton Street in Downtown Silver Spring. The Montgomery County Women’s Bar Foundation is sponsoring its 11th annual “Preparing for Success” Fall Forum on November 19, 2011, at Montgomery College, Rockville Campus. The Foundation is a non-profit organization that awards scholarships to young women in the community, and sponsors outreach programs like “Preparing for Success.” This event is free of charge and open to high school students in public, private and alternative schools, as well as girls in independent living programs. The Montgomery County Employee Giving Campaign celebrated its Kickoff at the Public Safety Training Academy on Friday, October 21. County Executive Ike Leggett spoke of the growing number of our neighbors in need. Several of our nonprofit partners introduced their causes to the assembled departmental campaign coordinators.
