Leggett, Roshdieh, Manna Food’s DeCarlo to Kick Off Give and Ride Week, April 15 to 21

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, April 10, 2018

Wednesday, April 11; 10:30 a.m.

Circle Outside the Executive Office Building

101 Monroe Street, Rockville

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett will urge everyone to participate in Ride On’s 31st annual Give and Ride program by donating food in exchange for a free ride from Sunday, April 15 through Saturday, April 21. Donations go to Manna Food Center, which feeds 11,000 hungry families and provides weekend food to 2,800 needy, elementary school students. Those who don’t use Ride On can still donate items by giving donations to any Ride On bus operator, or dropping off donations directly to Manna Foods, 9311 Gaither Rd, Gaithersburg, MD 20877.

Participation in the program has declined since Manna asked Ride On to shift Give and Ride from November/December to the spring to help Manna stock its shelves at a time when their food supplies typically run low. However, the need has not declined. Manna Food Center provides nutritious food to thousands of families experiencing hunger and continues to see a steady increase in the number of people needing assistance.

Donations needed are non-perishable food items in unbreakable containers, including canned fruit or vegetables; canned chicken, tuna or salmon; canned or dried beans; nut butters; roasted nuts; whole grain rice or pasta; oatmeal; shelf-stable milk boxes; and granola/cereal bars. Additionally, healthy food for children, disposable diapers, formula, and baby or toddler food and juice are wanted. View a list of the most needed foods and items online.

Joining Leggett will be Department of Transportation Director Al Roshdieh, Ride On Transit Services Division Chief Dan Hibbert and Manna Food Center Chief Executive Officer Jackie DeCarlo.

For information about Ride On, call 311 or TDD/TTY 301-251-4850, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or visit the Division of Transit Services website.
