Police Chiefs to Discuss Importance of Respectful Relationships Between Law Enforcement and Community

Thursday, June 11, 7 to 8:30 p.m.

The meeting can be viewed live on the County's Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/montgomerycountyinfo and County Cable Montgomery at Comcast/RCN Channel 6 and HD Channel 996 or Verizon Channel 30.

Montgomery County will host a virtual town hall meeting with local law enforcement to openly discuss tensions between the community and the impact of the recent death of George Floyd. Mr. Floyd died at the hands of a Minneapolis Police Officer while being restrained and handcuffed.

Police chiefs and the County Sherriff will offer their reactions and thoughts about George Floyd's abhorrent loss of life, address issues of law enforcement in our own County, and respond to community questions. The meeting follows numerous peaceful protests in the County denouncing police brutality and racism. This marks the first time that police chiefs from all County jurisdictions and the County Sheriff have come together to meet jointly with the community.

County Executive Marc Elrich and Council President Sidney Katz will make brief welcoming remarks.

Montgomery County Office of Human Rights Director Jim Stowe will moderate the meeting.

The panelist will include:

  • Chief Marcus Jones - Montgomery County
  • Chief Victor Brito - City of Rockville
  • Chief Mark Sroka - City of Gaithersburg
  • Chief John Fitzgerald - Village of Chevy Chase
  • Chief Darryl McSwain - Maryland-National Capital Park Police, Montgomery County Division
  • Chief Antonio DeVaul - City of Takoma Park
  • Sherriff Darren M. Popkin - Montgomery County

The event is hosted by the County's Office of Human Rights, the Human Rights Commission, and the County Committee Against Hate/Violence.
