For Immediate Release: Thursday, September 9, 2021

Montgomery County officials including Department of Environmental Protection Director Adam Ortiz, Maryland State Delegate Al Carr and representatives of One Montgomery Green will join community members to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the RainScapes Conservation Landscape in Downtown Wheaton with a ribbon cutting and community clean up at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 11. The event will be held as part of the County’s participation in the National Day of Service and Remembrance,

The event will be held at Wheaton’s Veteran’s Memorial Park on the corner of Reedie Drive and Amherst Avenue.

In 2011, DEP partnered with One Green Montgomery (formerly Green Wheaton), the Montgomery County Department of Transportation and the Wheaton Urban District to create a rain garden as a publicly accessible and visible conservation project. Ten years later, that garden has a new look and a new location.

The original garden was located at the corner of Reedie Drive and Grandview Avenue in Wheaton and was moved to its current location in 2016 when construction began of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning headquarters in the Wheaton Triangle Business District.

Event Agenda:

  • 10 a.m.-noon: Wheaton Cleanup: Participants will meet at the rain garden to pick up supplies and plogging kits.
  • Noon-1 p.m.: Celebration will include refreshments and a native plant giveaway.
  • 1 p.m.: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony: Montgomery County officials including DEP Director Adam Ortiz, Maryland State Delegate Al Carr, and community partners will participate in a ceremony celebrating the 10-year anniversary of the rain garden in its new location.
