List of ‘Critters in Crisis’ Due to Water Quality Concerns to be Announced by Montgomery County in Event in Colesville on Friday, Oct. 15

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, October 13, 2021

The Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) and Montgomery Parks are alerting the public about “Critters in Crisis,” at a special event at 10 a.m. on Friday, Oct.15, at Maydale Conservation Park in Colesville. Certain insects, fish and amphibians are now considered at-risk in local streams due to water quality issues.

Reporters will have opportunity to put on waders and try stream monitoring with biologists from DEP and Montgomery Parks.

The critters in crisis include the American Eel, Acuminate Crayfish, Giant Stonefly, Marbled Salamander and the Yellow Lance Mussel.

According to County natural resource specialists, pollution in County creeks and streams is having a serious negative impact on wildlife, including alteration to, or loss of, habitats, the oxygen content in water and the variety and hardiness of organisms.
