Montgomery County to Celebrate Arbor Day 2022 by Commemorating the New County Tree on Friday, April 29

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, April 27, 2022

Friday, April 29. 4 p.m.

East County Community Recreation Center

3310 Gateshead Manor Way

Silver Spring, MD 20904

Montgomery County will celebrate Arbor Day 2022 by commemorating the new county tree—the black tupelo—at ceremonies in Silver Spring at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 29. The County departments of Environmental Protection, Transportation and Parks will participate in the event, as will the Audubon Naturalist Society. The County will use the occasion of Arbor Day to also bring attention to increasing the tree canopy to help the environment and encourage tree planting.

The event will be at the East County Community Recreation Center located at 3310 Gateshead Manor Way in Silver Spring.

The event will include a ceremonial tree planting of black tupelos and other trees, raffling off several trees and registering for “plogging” supplies. Plogging is a popular new way to help the environment by doing an exercise like jogging, walking or biking while picking up trash.

The Montgomery County Council passed legislation in March naming the black tupelo as the County tree after the County’s Forest Conservation Advisory Committee received public input and support for it. The black tupelo is a great shade tree that is easy to care for and is one of the most-requested trees of the Tree Montgomery Program.
