Montgomery County Board of Elections Statement Regarding Duplicate Mail-in Ballots

For Immediate Release: Friday, October 4, 2024

The Maryland State Board of Elections’ vendor inadvertently printed and mailed duplicate mail-in ballots to 224 voters in Bethesda. The printing error affects a small group of voters out of 131,119 requested and ballots sent by U.S. Mail (so far) for the 2024 Presidential General Election in Montgomery County.

Each affected voter will receive a letter from the Maryland State Board of Elections and Montgomery County Board of Elections staff members are contacting affected voters to address any concerns and provide the following guidelines:

  • If you have already returned your voted mail-in ballot, please destroy the duplicate.
  • If you still have both mail-in ballots in your possession, please return one and destroy the other.
  • If you already returned both ballots, only one ballot will be accepted and counted.

Both the Maryland State Board of Elections in its letter and the Montgomery County Board of Elections in our communications with voters emphasize that we have procedures in place to assure that one and only one ballot gets counted for each voter.

The Board extends its gratitude to the affected voters who brought the vendor’s error to our attention. Voters with remaining questions about their ballots should feel free to contact the Montgomery County Board of Elections Office at 240-777-8550 or [email protected].
