CALL TO ACTION BY THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS ON HELP AMERICA VOTE DAY

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, January 20, 2026

The Montgomery County Board of Elections needs election workers for the upcoming primary election and will participate in the Help America Vote Day on Tuesday, January 27, 2026. This nationwide initiative, established by the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, calls on citizens to play an integral role in the election process by registering as election workers.

The primary focus of Help America Vote Day revolves around inspiring individuals to become poll workers, fostering inclusivity, and ensuring equal access to voting. Those interested in participating in this paid volunteer position should be registered voters in the State of Maryland, proficient in English, and cannot hold a position within a campaign.

Due to the diversity within the county, the Montgomery County Board of Elections also needs voters who speak multiple languages. Voters fluent in both English and Spanish are especially needed in each polling place to meet the requirements of Section 203 of the 1975 Voting Rights Act which stipulates a bilingual Spanish speaker be available.

Students 16 years old or older, who are eligible to register to vote, can serve as poll workers. Students serving as poll workers may choose Student Service Learning (SSL) credits in lieu of the stipend.
