MONTGOMERY COUNTY BOARD OF ELECTIONS VERIFIES INITIAL PETITION SIGNATURES

The Montgomery County Board of Elections received on July 21, 2026, the initial batch of petition signatures collected by the Committee to Control MoCo Spending to have an amendment of the County Charter submitted to the registered voters of Montgomery County, Maryland.

The proposed amendment to Charter Section 305 would require a unanimous vote of the County Council to increase the annual operating budget above the annual rate of inflation.

The Montgomery County Board of Elections followed procedures prescribed by the Election Law and Maryland State Board of Elections and, within the legal deadline of twenty (20) calendar days, processed all 11,408 signatures from the first batch and validated 7,999 signatures. 

 

The Committee to Control MoCo Spending submitted another batch on July 27, 2026, that, as per Petition organizers, included 2,524 signatures. The Montgomery County Board of Elections has a legal deadline to process the submitted Petition signatures by August 17, 2026.

The Petition must have 10,000 validated signatures for the question to appear on the 2026 General Election ballot.
