On July 21, 2026, and on July 27, 2026, the Montgomery County Board of Elections received two separate batches of petition signatures submitted by the Committee to Control MoCo Spending. The petition is to have an amendment of the County Charter submitted to the registered voters of Montgomery County, Maryland.
The proposed amendment to Charter Section 305 would require a unanimous vote of the County Council to increase the annual operating budget above the annual rate of inflation.
On August 10, 2026, the Montgomery County Board of Elections completed validation of the first batch of 11,408 signatures and on August 17, 2026, completed validation of the second batch of 2,666 petition signatures.
The number of validated signatures must meet the legally required 10,000 validated petition signatures to place the question on the 2026 Gubernatorial General Election ballot.
The Montgomery County Board of Elections followed procedures prescribed by the Election Law and Maryland State Board of Elections and determined that:
The Election Director of the Montgomery County Board of Elections has issued a Notice of Petition Determination confirming that the Committee to Control MoCo Spending has not submitted a sufficient number of legally valid petition signatures to have the question appear on the 2026 General Election ballot.
