Press Releases - Department of Transportation

For Immediate Release: Thursday, July 15, 2021

Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is requesting public feedback about design concepts for the new FLASH bus rapid transit (BRT) stations along Veirs Mill Road (MD 586) between Montgomery College and the Wheaton Metro station in Wheaton.

Members of the public are encouraged to view the project presentation before completing the online survey. Residents aged 18 and over who complete the survey will be entered into a drawing for a chance to win one of three fifty-dollar gift cards. The drawing will be held on July 18.

The Veirs Mill Road BRT will be a 7-mile, limited-stop, branded bus service with an expected twelve stations along Veirs Mill Road. This 60-foot, level-boarding bus service will improve travel time and increase transit equity. The BRT will improve passenger transit mobility by connecting riders to high-density housing and employment centers. The Veirs Mill Road corridor experiences some of the highest existing transit volumes in Montgomery County and, for that reason, has long been considered for transit enhancements.

BRT is a modern, flexible, lower cost, premium form of transportation that combines features of both a bus system and a light rail system.

BRT features include:

  • Dedicated lanes, reducing traffic congestion.
  • Green light priority signaling, allowing for shorter travel times.
  • Multiple doors and low floor vehicles, which result in quick, easy and efficient boarding and exiting.
  • Pay stations to pay for the fares before boarding, which allows for faster boarding, and upgraded, modern stations.
