For Immediate Release: Thursday, October 1, 2009

George Pelecanos, award-winning crime novelist, film producer and essayist will discuss his novel “The Turnaround” at the Rockville Library on October 15 at 6 p.m. The library is located at 21 Maryland Ave.

Before publishing his first novel in l992, the Washington, DC native worked as a line cook, dishwasher, bartender and woman’s shoe salesman. He has published 16 crime novels set in the Washington metropolitan area. Pelecanos has won the Raymond Chandler Award in Italy, the Grand Prix du Roman Noir in France and the Falcon Award in Japan. He has produced a number of feature films and more recently was producer, writer and story editor for the acclaimed HBO dramatic series “The Wire.”

“The Turnaround,” based on a true incident taken from a Washington Post headline, tells the story of three teens who, on a hot summer afternoon in 1972, drove into an unfamiliar neighborhood, and six lives were altered forever. Thirty five years later, one survivor of that day reaches out to another, opening a door that could lead to salvation. But another survivor is now out of prison, looking for reparation in any form he can find it. “The Turnaround” describes a journey from the rock-and-soul streets of the 1970s to the changing neighborhoods of DC today.

Pelecanos’ appearance is sponsored by the African American Book Discussion Group of Rockville Library. Copies of the book will be available for borrowing at the circulation desk in the Rockville library and from other Montgomery County Public Libraries.
