Montgomery County's Department of Public Works and Transportation will transfer road maintenance and traffic responsibilities for Great Seneca Highway to the Maryland State Highway Administration, effective June 30, in exchange for the County's taking control of segments of 22 minor, predominantly two-lane State roads in the county.
"This is a move that makes sense for both the County and the State, and one that will, most importantly, benefit the residents of Montgomery County," said Al Genetti, Director of Montgomery County's Department of Public Works and Transportation. "It's a more appropriate and logical fit for the State to maintain control of major highways, such as Great Seneca, and for the County to serve the needs of local roads, such as those that are being transferred by the State."
Under the agreement worked out between the County and State, Great Seneca Highway - from Key West Avenue in Rockville to Middlebrook Road in Germantown - will now become a State road. It will be assigned Maryland state route number 119 (MD 119), but will also retain the name, Great Seneca Highway.
Under the agreement, the following 22 segments of former State roads are being transferred to Montgomery County:
