For Immediate Release: Friday, February 6, 2015
Montgomery County Councilmember Craig Rice, who chairs the Council's Education Committee, will be the featured guest at 2 p.m. TODAY on En Sintonía con el Concejo de Montgomery (Tuned In with the Montgomery County Council), a weekly show on Radio America (WACA 1540 AM). He will be discussing a variety of topics including the impending change of leadership at Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and overall student safety in schools.
Earlier this week, the Board of Education announced that it would not be offering to renew the contract of Superintendent of Schools Joshua Starr. Board members did not give a formal reason as to why they thought a change in leadership was needed.
Councilmember Rice's committee on Feb. 2 held a worksession with representatives of MCPS and the Police Department regarding policies and procedures regarding the reporting of sexual abuse allegations. MCPS delayed in publicly reporting several incidents that occurred during the current school year and the committee wanted to hear whether reporting delays could endanger other students who may not have been aware that an incident may have occurred.
The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered into a community partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs and gives an opportunity for residents to express views and ask questions of Councilmembers. The partnership includes the 30-minute weekly show at 2 p.m. each Friday on the Washington Region's most popular Spanish language station.
Julie Ríos Little, bilingual communication specialist at the Council is host of the show. En Sintonía features guests talking about important community issues before the Council.
Occasionally the show provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents and businesses.
In addition to the radio broadcast, the show can be heard via the Internet at: http://radioamerica.net/en-vivo/.
