Press Releases

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, February 24, 2015

In preparation for opening the new Silver Spring Library, the current library will close to the public on Sunday, March 15 at 5 p.m. The branch will be open from 1 to 5 p.m. that day, and will host a closing event for the Silver Spring community from 3:30 to 5 p.m., commemorating 58 years of library service at that site.

The Silver Spring Library began service in 1931 in the East Silver Spring Elementary School. In 1934 the Library moved to the Jesup Blair Community House, the home still standing in Jesup Blair Park. The third site is the current library, which opened in 1957 and was built on land donated by the Hecht Co. The new Silver Spring Library at Wayne and Fenton will be the fourth site of the Silver Spring Library.

Silver Spring Library was also one of the first of seven independent libraries to form Montgomery County Public Libraries on July 1st, 1951.

For assistance in managing accounts during the closed period, customers should speak with any Silver Spring Library staff member, call Ask A Librarian at 240 777-0001 or review information on the Montgomery County Public Libraries (MCPL) blog at http://silverspringlibrarymcpl.blogspot.com (beginning March 15).

Customers are reminded that once the current Silver Spring Library closes they may use other nearby branches, such as Long Branch, White Oak, Wheaton or any branch that may be convenient. Branch hours and locations can be found at: www.montgomerycountymd.gov/library.

“There is much hard work to do in the coming weeks,” said Parker Hamilton, MCPL director, “but this will give us the time we need to close the building down. Once we occupy the new building and assess the work that remains, we will be ready to announce an opening date.”
