As part of Montgomery County’s 16th annual Recycling Awareness Week, the Montgomery County Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Solid Waste Services (DSWS) recognized outstanding achievements in recycling, waste reduction, reuse, buying recycled-content products, backyard composting and grasscycling, and educational efforts. Local businesses, organizations, multi-family apartment and condominium properties, residents and individuals were honored for their contributions to increase recycling in support of the County’s goal to recycle 70 percent of all waste by 2020.

Recipients were announced at the Recycling Achievement Recognition Program held on May 20 at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. Loo Katz, host of the Morning Show weekdays on 97.1 WASH-FM, was the featured speaker and together with County Executive Ike Leggett, Council Vice President Nancy Floreen, Councimember Roger Berliner and DEP Director Lisa Feldt, participated in the recognition ceremony to thank the recipients for their commitment to protecting the environment.

Recognition was given for efforts including: recycling more than 70 percent of waste generated; implementing increased recycling and waste reduction activities; and contributing volunteer service to increase overall awareness and participation in the County’s recycling programs. Awards were presented to the following recipients in several categories:

Outstanding Leadership Efforts to Increase Recycling Awareness
Ten community champions were recognized for their efforts to increase overall awareness of waste reduction, recycling, buying recycled products, and grasscycling and backyard composting to others in the community, including several recycling program volunteers who contributed their time and talents to support the County’s recycling efforts. The following were recognized for their contributions to increase awareness and participation in the County:

Theresa Babicki, Good Earth, Potomac; Alena Biagas, Habitat for Humanity Metro Maryland ReStore, Gaithersburg, Betty Denne, Damascus Library, Damascus; Susan Eisendrath, Rockville; Michelle Fang, Rockville; Alexander Guzman, Germantown; Kimberly Guzman, Germantown; Freeman Lee, Germantown; Bebe McMeekin, Bethesda; and Ten Thousand Villages, Rockville.

Multi-Family Property Excellence in Recycling
The following multi-family properties were recognized for their efforts to recycle 70 percent or more of their waste stream in 2014:

Avalon at Grosvenor Station, Gaithersburg; Berkshires at Rock Spring, Bethesda; Churchill Senior Living; Germantown; The Sterling, North Bethesda; Victory Terrace, Potomac; The Waterford Condominium, Kensington; Willow Manor at Cloppers Mill, Germantown; and Willow Manor at Colesville, Silver Spring.

Multi-Family Property Outstanding Effort in Recycling
Recognition went to the following multi-family properties that established and/or contributed to excellence in their on-site recycling programs:

Asbury Methodist Village, Gaithersburg; Cherry Knoll Apartments, Germantown; Colonnade at Kentlands, Rockville; Decoverly IV Condominium, Bethesda; Jefferson at Inigo’s Crossing, North Bethesda; The Promenade, Bethesda; Riderwood Village, Silver Spring; and The Riviera of Chevy Chase, Chevy Chase.

Multi-Family Resident Outstanding Individual Achievement in Recycling
The following residents living in multi-family properties were recognized for their outstanding individual efforts to improve the recycling at their multi-family community:

Louise Liu, Seneca Knolls Condominium, Germantown; and Margo Morrison, Friends House Retirement Community, Sandy Spring.

Multi-Family Property Staff Outstanding Individual Achievement in Recycling
The following staff at multi-family properties were recognized for their outstanding efforts to improve recycling programs and/or increase resident recycling awareness and participation:

Thomas Doody, Brookside Apartments, Kensington; and Elieth Montiel, The Willoughby of Chevy Chase Condominium, Chevy Chase.

Excellence in Recycling – Business
The following businesses, organizations and commercial properties were recognized for their efforts to recycle at least 70 percent of their waste stream generated in 2014:
