Councilmember Craig Rice’s Statement on OLO Report on MCPS Resources and Staffing

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, September 22, 2015

Montgomery County Councilmember Craig Rice, who chairs the Council’s Education Committee, made the following statement today after the Council received an Office of Legislative Oversight report on resources and staffing in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS):

I thank OLO for its report Resources and Staffing Among MCPS Schools. It is another component of the Council’s continued work to understand the many dynamic factors that affect the achievement of all students in Montgomery County Public Schools. As chair of the Council’s Education Committee, the persistence of the achievement gap for low-income and minority students is my primary concern, and I know that my colleagues in MCPS and on the Board of Education share the same commitment to equity and excellence for all students.

I commend the school system for its demonstrated investment in differentiating resources to support students’ individual needs. I look forward to working together as we discuss what additional programmatic resources would best support our students with the most needs and how we can effectively and creatively implement these strategies.

In continuing this critical work, we ensure that we are maximizing all the budgetary, staff development, human capital management and other tools available to provide the best possible education for all the students of Montgomery County Public Schools.
