Montgomery County Councilmember Sidney Katz, who is in his second year on the County Council after serving 36 years in various capacities with the City of Gaithersburg—including 16 years as mayor—will be among nine honorees on Friday, Dec. 11, at the Sentinel Newspapers’ Second Annual “Excellence in Government Awards.”
The “Excellence in Government” award ceremony will be held from 5:30-9 p.m. at the Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club. The event is open to the public.
Others to be recognized are Maryland Governor Larry Hogan; Attorney General Brian Frosh; State’s Attorney for Montgomery County John McCarthy; Rockville City Councilmember Beryl Feinberg; Montgomery County police officer Rose Borisow; Tara Palmore of the Infectious Disease Fellowship Training Program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH); Julie Segre of the National Human Genome Research Institute at NIH; and the late publisher Austin Kiplinger.
Councilmember Katz, who was elected to represent County Council District 3 in November 2014, started his public service career in Gaithersburg serving on the Planning Commission from 1976 to 1978. He was elected to the Gaithersburg City Council and in 1978 and served until 1998. He was elected mayor in 1998 and served until Nov. 10, 2014. He resigned as mayor upon his election to the County Council.
Councilmember Katz is serving on the Council’s Public Safety Committee and on its Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee.
“It is a great honor to be recognized with such an illustrious group of people who have influenced government—and beyond—in so many ways,” said Councilmember Katz.
Councilmember Katz was inducted into the Maryland Municipal League Hall of Fame in 1998, and is a graduate and fellow of the Academy for Excellence in Local Governance. He served as president of the Maryland Municipal League (MML) in 2008-09.
While mayor of Gaithersburg, Councilmember Katz listed among his most significant accomplishments the fact that with thoughtful and innovative planning, the City continued to deliver outstanding services and amenities to its residents while remaining debt free.
