Metro Provides Updated Information about SafeTrack Surge #7

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, August 10, 2016

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (Metro) has provided new information about SafeTrack Surge #7 that includes a weekend line segment shutdown and a longer wait time between Red Line trains during the week. Surge #7 includes: 

  • Continuous Single Tracking between Shady Grove and Twinbrook, August 9-12 & 15-18
  • Weekend Line Segment Shutdown between Shady Grove and White Flint, August 13-14

Reminder: Metrorail now closing at midnight Friday and Saturday nights

 

Weekday train service will operate as follows:

 

  • Red Line trains will serve Shady Grove and Rockville every 25 minutes (regularly every 6 minutes during rush hour).
  • All other Red Line stations will have near-normal service with additional trains operating between Twinbrook and Glenmont and between Grosvenor and Silver Spring during AM/PM rush.
  • During the midday/evening, trains will run between Shady Grove and Silver Spring every 18 minutes and between Grosvenor and Glenmont every 12 minutes.
  • After 10:00 p.m., trains will run between Shady Grove and Glenmont every 20 minutes.

Bus Options:

 

  • Ride On will run free weekday rush hour express shuttle bus service between Shady Grove and Grosvenor-Strathmore.
  • Additional bus options are listed by station at wmata.com/safetrack.

Weekend service will operate as follows:

 

  • Free shuttle buses will replace trains between Shady Grove and Grosvenor from 7:00 a.m. Saturday through closing Sunday.
  • Stations closed: Shady Grove, Rockville, Twinbrook and White Flint.

**NOTE**Red Line trains serving Shady Grove and Rockville, especially during rush hour, may be extremely crowded. Customers at those stations should expect delays of more than an hour due to the severe service reductions. Customers who park & ride at the Shady Grove and Rockville stations should consider other park & ride options like Twinbrook, White Flint, Glenmont, Wheaton or Forest Glen. Metro riders who have the ability to do so should consider alternate travel options and avoid traveling during rush hour if possible.
