MCDOT to Close Pennyfield Lock Road on April 3 and 4

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, March 29, 2017

MCDOT will be closing Pennyfield Lock Road to traffic on April 3-4 between River Road and the Chesapeake History Park as part of a project to replace the Pennyfield Lock Road Bridge. The road closure will begin at 7 a.m. on Monday, April 3 and the road will reopen at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, April 4. During the two days, the construction contractor will be installing new bridge beams. Local traffic will be accommodated, but there will be no access to the Park during the closure.

Construction on the project began on February 6 to replace the bridge built in the 1930s to move the bridge about 20 feet to the west of the existing structure and add two, two-foot shoulders to accommodate bicyclists.  The project also includes construction of a stormwater management bioswale and reconstruction of Pennyfield Lock Road north and south of the bridge. The contractor is using accelerated bridge construction techniques to minimize disruptions to the travelling public and local community. Read more about the project.
