MCDOT to Close Two Lanes on Rockville Pike Near Medical Center Metro Station Overnight, April 9-13

For Immediate Release: Monday, April 3, 2017

As part of the construction of the Multimodal Crossing Project to construct a pedestrian underpass at the Medical Center Metro Station, MCDOT will be closing two lanes of Rockville Pike overnight between Wilson Drive and Woodmont Avenue in Bethesda, weather permitting, from April 9 through April 12. There is a possibility that the closures will also occur on April 13.

The closures will occur between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m.  The closure schedule will affect the lanes indicated below:

  • Sunday, April 9:  The two right-most SOUTHBOUND lanes.

  • Monday, April 10:  The two left-most SOUTHBOUND lanes.

  • Tuesday April 11:  The two left-most NORTHBOUND lanes.

  • Wednesday April 12:  The two right-most NORTHBOUND lanes.

  • Only if necessary, Thursday April 13: Lanes to be determined.

In addition to the pedestrian underpass, the Multimodal Crossing Project will construct deep elevators to the Metrorail mezzanine on the east side of Rockville Pike at the entrance to the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Naval Support Activity Bethesda (NASB) and make improvements at the nearby intersection of Rockville Pike and Jones Bridge Road.

The Crossing Project was conceived following the federal BRAC law enacted in 2005 and implemented in 2011, which mandated an increase of personnel at NSAB by nearly 45 percent and doubled the number of annual campus visits to approximately one million.  Daily pedestrian crossings of Rockville Pike at Walter Reed/NSAB have increased from 3,000 prior to 2011 to 7,000 after 2011.  The Crossing Project will enhance safety for Metrorail passengers, commuter buses, carpools and neighborhood pedestrians, providing safe access to and from the Walter Reed/NSAB campus.

Additional information about the Crossing Project is available online.
