Office of Consumer Protection Intervenes to Recover and Distribute Clothing Left at Evicted Drycleaners

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, May 31, 2017

Consumers who dropped off clothing at Courtesy Custom Cleaners, located at 180 Rollins Avenue, Rockville, MD 20852, may be able to reclaim their items even though the store has closed and the owners have been evicted from the site. Note: The receipts may indicate that the business was located at 180 Rolling Road.

Montgomery County’s Office of Consumer Protection (OCP) has made arrangements with the landlord to allow OCP staff access to the Courtesy Custom Cleaners to retrieve customers’ items. Customers are asked to file a complaint with OCP and provide a copy of their receipt (if available) and any identifying features of the clothing left behind. Complaints can be submitted online at www.montgomerycountymd.gov/OCP/consumer/filing_complaints.html.

Beginning on June 2nd, OCP staff will then retrieve items once per week and bring them to the OCP office in Rockville, 100 Maryland Avenue, Room 330, Rockville, MD 20850. Consumers will be able to pick up their items Monday to Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Customers are asked to bring identification for all pick-ups. Unclaimed items will be donated to charity. Updated information will be provided on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/OCP.ConsumerWise

OCP and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office established an award winning “Business Eviction Response Team (BERT)” to help protect consumers from losing their possessions from certain stores when a court orders an eviction.

“Our dedicated staff go the extra mile in an effort to help consumers,” said OCP Director Eric Friedman.  “We greatly appreciate the cooperation of the landlord, Capital Management & Development, in helping our staff find creative solutions to fulfill our mission of ensuring integrity in our marketplace.”
