ROCKVILLE, Md., October 18, 2017—The Montgomery County Council’s Health and Human Services (HHS) Committee will meet jointly with the Education (ED) Committee at 2 p.m. on Thursday, October 19 to discuss substance abuse prevention efforts in schools with representatives from Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS). The HHS and ED Committees’ joint meeting will be held in the Seventh Floor Council Hearing Room.

The Committees will discuss substance abuse and suicide trend data for youth; the collaborative efforts between MCPS, DHHS and other key stakeholders to implement substance abuse prevention efforts in schools; and prevention activities sponsored and supported by MCPS. The HHS Committee is chaired by Councilmember Leventhal and includes Council President Berliner and Councilmember Rice. The ED Committee is chaired by Councilmember Rice and includes Councilmembers Elrich and Navarro.

The Government Operations and Fiscal Policy (GO) and ED Committees will meet jointly at 9:30 a.m. in the Seventh Floor Council Hearing Room to receive an update on the possibility of creating a Student Loan Refinancing Authority in the County, to help County residents who are struggling to meet their student loan debt obligations. Those expected to participate in this meeting include Robert Hagedoorn and Mary Casciotti of the Department of Finance, and Kathleen Boucher of the Office of Intergovernmental Relations. The issues that will be discussed at the meeting include recommendations from the Statewide student loan refinancing study; potential tasks and products for a student loan refinancing market study for the County; alternatives to creating a student loan refinancing authority; and the funding required for a County study.

The GO Committee is chaired by Councilmember Navarro and includes Councilmember Katz and Council Vice President Riemer.
