Highway Services Completes Projects to Benefit the Environment Under Partnership with DEP

For Immediate Release: Friday, October 27, 2017

The residential roadway sweeping program is a partnership between MCDOT and the County’s Department of Environmental Protection to protect the County’s streams and critical watersheds. This year, MCDOT swept about 4,000 lane miles of roads and removed 700 tons of abrasives and debris left behind after the winter snow season that would otherwise have found their way into storm drains and eventually waterways. The program also improves the appearance and safety of County streets.

MCDOT also cleaned five miles of pervious pavement to improve the performance of this on-site stormwater filtering option. Permeable pavement is built with materials that let water pass through, allowing rainwater to naturally filter through the ground, reducing stormwater runoff.
