Spin Dockless Bikeshare to Begin Service in Silver Spring December 8

For Immediate Release: Tuesday, November 28, 2017

MCDOT has signed an agreement with Spin dockless bikeshare and 100 bikes will be placed in Silver Spring starting the evening of December 7. Spin is the third company to participate in Montgomery County’s dockless bike demonstration project, joining LimeBike and Ofo.

“The Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) is expanding biking options with Spin – the third dockless bikeshare company to participate in the County’s Silver Spring dockless bikeshare demonstration project,” said MCDOT Director Al Roshdieh. “By making dockless bikeshare available, MCDOT is continuing to increase the range of high-quality transportation choices our residents deserve. Providing more ways to bike, walk and take transit benefits everyone, including drivers, as we move more people in fewer vehicles. It’s better for our economy, our community and a sustainable Montgomery County.”

Dockless Bikeshare does not rely on fixed bike stations. Customers use a mobile phone app to locate a nearby bike with GPS and unlock it. When a customer completes a dockless bike trip, the bike is parked on any publicly-owned land within the demonstration area. An option is to use the dockless bikeshare preferred parking areas marked by signs along Ellsworth Street next to Veteran’s Plaza and behind the Silver Spring Transit Center along Ripley Street. See map.

“Spin is excited to partner with Montgomery County to provide an affordable, healthy, and sustainable mobility option to Silver Spring,” said Head of Government Partnerships Kyle Rowe. “MCDOT is at the forefront of dockless bike share implementation by testing out designated parking areas; with continued collaboration we can ensure that everyone has access to a bicycle while still being responsible with our invaluable public space.”More information about Spin is available online. For user assistance, contact support@spin.pm,  Spin on Twitter, or 1-888-262-5189.

To use a dockless bike, a customer downloads an app from either Spin, Limebike or Ofo. There may be other options available to use the bikes. Questions about the service should be directed to the bikeshare companies.
