Montgomery County Council Statement Condemning President Trump’s Racist Remarks about El Salvador, Haiti and Africa

ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 18, 2018The Montgomery County Council strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s abhorrent, racist and vulgar remarks targeting our residents from El Salvador, Haiti and Africa.  We embrace our immigrant community and appreciate their contributions to our County. 

Montgomery County’s strength is its diversity.  Residents from every corner of the globe come to our County seeking peace, stability and a better quality of life for their families.  Their contributions greatly enrich our community.  The County is committed to social justice and building and maintaining an inclusive community for all our residents.

Understanding, tolerance and respect are hallmarks of the Montgomery County way.     

 

The County has the largest population of foreign born residents in the State of Maryland with nearly one-third of our residents coming from other countries. More than 70 percent of students in Montgomery County Public Schools are either Hispanic/Latino, African-American, Asian-American or multiracial. 

 

In November 2016 the Council approved Resolution 18-673, Reaffirming Community Safety and Trust and Denouncing Anti-Immigrant Activity, Racial Bias and Discrimination, Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, Hate Speech, Hate Crimes and Harassment in Montgomery County.   The Council affirms the dignity of all County residents and recognizes the importance of their contributions to our social, religious, cultural and economic life.
