Councilmember Marc Elrich is the Special Guest
on Council’s Radio America Show,
Councilmember Elrich will discuss the Purple Line,
affordable housing, racial equity, small businesses,
and assistance for residents with Temporary Protected Status

ROCKVILLE, Md., March 9, 2018—Councilmember Marc Elrich is the featured guest on today's episode of “En Sintonia con el Concejo del Condado” (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council), airing at 2:30 p.m. on Radio America (WACA 1540AM). Councilmember Elrich is the chair of the Public Safety Committee and a member of the Education Committee. He will discuss several social and economic impacts of the Purple Line, which is currently under construction. The Purple Line is a 16-mile light rail line that will extend from Bethesda in Montgomery County to New Carrollton in Prince George's County.

The major topics he will discuss include the Purple Line’s potential impact on the availability of affordable housing and on small businesses along the route, and the need for a “racial-equity lens” to assess the specific, measurable impact of new development projects on different ethnic communities in the County.

He will close out the program by discussing the resources available to residents with Temporary Protected Status (TPS). The current administration has announced that it will no longer renew TPS for nationals from El Salvador, Nicaragua, Haiti, and other nations. According to CASA, Montgomery County is home to more than 10,000 TPS holders, primarily from El Salvador, who could face deportation, the loss of property, and estrangement from their American-born children.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
