Future of Honduran residents
with Temporary Protected Status
is focus of “En Sintonia con el Concejo del Condado,”

ROCKVILLE, Md., May 4, 2018—George Escobar, senior director for human services at CASA; Mardoel Hernandez, coordinator for Alianza Nacional TPS, and Silverio Coy, immigration attorney, are the featured guests on today’s episode of “En Sintonia con el Concejo del Condado” (In Tune with the Montgomery County Council), airing at 2:30 p.m. on Radio America (WACA 1540AM). They will discuss the impact of the federal government potentially discontinuing Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Honduran nationals.

The Trump administration is currently reviewing whether to extend TPS for 57,000 Honduran residents of the United States who hold the status. If the decision is made to revoke their status, many could face deportation, separation from their families, and highly uncertain circumstances. Hondurans are the second-most numerous TPS beneficiaries in Maryland, after El Salvadoran residents. In January the Trump administration discontinued TPS for the country’s 200,000 El Salvadoran beneficiaries, along with several other nationalities.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
