Wheaton Friday Night Free Concert Series continues Billy Mayfield and The Soul Truth playing at 7 p.m. Friday, July 13, at Wheaton Veterans Urban Park

For Immediate Release: Monday, July 9, 2018

The Wheaton Friday Night Free Concert Series will continue at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 13, as “Billy Mayfield and The Soul Truth” highlight the third of the six summer concerts at Wheaton Veterans Urban Park.

The park is located at 11200 Amherst Ave. and Reedie Drive in Wheaton (behind the Safeway supermarket and one block from the Wheaton Metro Station). Attendees are advised to bring chairs or blankets to better enjoy the outdoor atmosphere.

Billy Mayfield began singing at age 4 in church. Since the musician and songwriter formed his rhythm and blues, soul and funk band, it has grown from a local act to one that has performed at nationally televised events, including NBA and WNBA games. The band has carved its local following at venues in Washington, D.C., around the metropolitan region and along the DMV beaches. It also has performed at larger events such as the Hoop Dreams Scholarship Fund Winter Gala.

Since moving to the Washington area in 1987, Mayfield has performed with The Capitol Quintet, which was a featured halftime act at NBA games. Mayfield also sang The Star-Spangled Banner at many NBA basketball games. In the early 1990's, he was featured in the blues band "The Chosen Few."

The Wheaton summer concert series is hosted by the Wheaton Urban District in partnership with Montgomery County Parks. Concerts will be held the second and fourth Fridays of July and August.

The remainder of the concert series, with each starting at 7 p.m.:

  • July 27: The Crawdaddies
  • August 10: Sin Miedo
  • August 24: The Nighthawks
