Montgomery County Council President Riemer to meet with media on Monday, July 23 at 11am

For Immediate Release: Friday, July 20, 2018

ROCKVILLE, Md., July 20, 2018—Montgomery County Council President Hans Riemer will meet with members of the media on Monday, July 23 at 11 a.m. to discuss key issues concerning the Council and its respective committees.

Riemer will discuss his work with the County’s First Lady Catherine Leggett to name Charles W. Woodward High School after abolitionist and author Reverend Josiah Henson.  In 2022 the Tilden Middle School building is scheduled to reopen as Woodward High School.  Henson, whose autobiography helped end slavery, is “one of Montgomery County’s greatest unsung heroes,” said both Riemer and Leggett, who have written a letter to the Montgomery County Board of Education requesting the high school name change.

Riemer also will discuss new legislation being recommended by County Executive Leggett on telecommunications towers and proposed regulatory changes recommended by the Council’s Planning, Housing and Economic Development Committee to streamline the approval process for constructing accessory dwelling units.  These low-cost housing units are also known as in-law suites and accessory apartments and include living spaces constructed over garages, basement apartments and even tiny backyard homes.  In addition Riemer will discuss the next steps for the County’s Bicycle Master Plan, which has the goal of making the County a world-class bicycling community with a safe and connected bicycle network.

Council President Riemer’s meeting with members of the media will be in the fourth floor conference room of the Council Office Building at 100 Maryland Ave. in Rockville.
