Friendship Picnic to Celebrate Diverse Cultures and Faiths

The sixth annual Montgomery County Friendship Picnic brings people of diverse cultures and faiths together to make new friends and discuss ways to build a stronger community. The event will be held Sunday, September 23 from noon to 4 p.m. The free, family event will take place at the Wheaton Regional Park located at 2000 Shorefield Road.

Everyone is welcomed to this free picnic which includes traditional, Kosher, Halal and vegetarian lunch options. There will be a wide range of activities for children and adults including music, dancing, a moon bounce, face painting, carousel, train rides and more.

In addition to the recreation activities there will be opportunities for small group conversations to discuss how to peaceably and respectfully move toward a nonviolent community. Everyone’s thoughts are valued, and all will be heard.

“This year, as never before, calls us to work harder and come together more often to encourage and celebrate our diversity and unity as one Montgomery County,” said Montgomery County Human Rights Director James Stowe. “In the current national climate created of division, tension and fear of each other, we must be more intentional about making our community welcoming and inclusive if everyone. The Friendship Picnic gives us such an occasion.”

This event is endorsed and supported by the Montgomery County Committee on Hate/Violence, the Montgomery County Office of Human Rights, the Montgomery County Human Rights Commission, the Montgomery County Office of Community Partnerships and the Montgomery County Executive’s Faith Community Working Group, Montgomery Parks, the Montgomery County Police and the County Fire and Rescue Service. 

Free parking and shuttle service is available to and from the Wheaton Ice Rink and Athletic fields located at 11717 Orebaugh Avenue.
