Ribbon-Cutting Celebration Opens the Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center

For Immediate Release: Saturday, October 6, 2018

Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett, County Council President Hans Riemer and community members opened the Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Saturday, Oct. 6. The new facility is in the Good Hope Local Park located at 14715 Good Hope Road in Silver Spring.

Montgomery County Department of General Services Director David Dise; Montgomery County Recreation Director Gabe Albornoz; Montgomery Parks Director Michael F. Riley; Strathmore Hall Foundation, Inc. Board of Directors Chair Karen Lefkowitz; and Reverend Tori Butler, lead pastor of Good Hope United Methodist, joined Leggett and Riemer at the event.

The 14,000-square-foot center doubles the size of the previous facility. The building features a full-size gymnasium, social hall, kitchen, multipurpose room, fitness and weight room and more. The park amenities include a playground, softball fields, a lighted baseball field, tennis and basketball courts.

“It is particularly gratifying to celebrate the reopening of the Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center, which is the fourth and final neighborhood recreation center reopened during my administration,” said Leggett. “This modernized facility will provide high-quality arts and recreation programming in a previously underserved neighborhood.”

World-class arts programming will be offered at the new facility through a unique partnership between Montgomery County Recreation and the Strathmore Hall Foundation, Inc.

Leggett recognized former Chief Executive Officer and founder of Strathmore Hall Foundation Inc. Eliot Pfanstiehl during the opening ceremony. Pfanstiehl retired in August after leading the Strathmore Arts Foundation, Inc. for 38 years.

“Thank you to our Department of General Services for its work to replace the aged and inadequate facility and deliver a new building that will benefit our residents for many years,” said Riemer. “The

partnership between our Recreation Department and Strathmore Hall Inc. expands opportunities for our residents to enjoy and participate in excellent arts programming in the east county region.”

The Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines for LEED Silver certification. It complies with Americans with Disabilities Act standards. The construction costs for the facility is approximately $8.5 million. DLR Group served as architect. The construction contractor is Keller Brothers, Inc.

Visit the Department of General Services website for more information about the facility.

The Good Hope Neighborhood Recreation Center is open Tuesday through Saturday. It is closed Sundays and Mondays. For the facility’s specific hours of operation and programming information, visit the Montgomery County Recreation website.
