Small businesses impacted by Wheaton’s revitalization to receive additional funding from County’s Small Business Assistance Program

ROCKVILLE, Md., Oct. 30, 2018—Today the Montgomery County Council unanimously approved a $200,000 special appropriation request from Council Vice President Nancy Navarro to assist small businesses impacted by the Wheaton Revitalization Project.  Once the project is complete, the Wheaton community will have a town square, improved mobility and additional employment opportunities; however, during construction small businesses have faced challenges from decreased foot traffic and limited parking options.

“As we continue our work revitalizing Wheaton, it is essential that the local character of the area be maintained, and this includes our community-based small businesses,” said Council Vice President Navarro, who represents Wheaton.  “To ensure that small businesses here continue to thrive during this period of transition, the additional funding will provide needed resources to give them a small financial boost to cross the finish line.”

In 2012, Council Vice President Navarro, who also serves as chair of the Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee, was the lead sponsor of Bill 6-12, Economic Development - Small Business Assistance.  This bill  established a program to assist small businesses located in an a enterprise zone or urban renewal area when they are adversely impacted by a County redevelopment project or a redevelopment project located on County property.
