Significance of Maryland’s new guardianship law is focus of “En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery,” this Friday, January 11 at 2 p.m. on Radio America

For Immediate Release: Friday, January 11, 2019

ROCKVILLE, Md., January 10, 2019—Liana Montecinos, immigration lawyer; Ana Sol Gutierrez, former state delegate and community activist; Dr. Gabriela Romo, bilingual counselor who works with immigrants; and Martha Bohorquez, employment development coordinator for the Jewish Social Service Agency (JSSA), will be the featured guests on the Friday, January 11 episode of En Sintonía con el Concejo del Condado de Montgomery (Tuned in with the Montgomery County Council), which airs in its new 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. timeslot.

The first three guests will discuss Maryland’s recent expansion of guardianship laws allowing parents who face the threat of deportation to designate a temporary guardian for their children. These measures are designed to reduce the risk of a child ending up as a ward of the state and remaining without a home in the event their parents are deported.

In the program’s second segment, Martha Bohorquez will discuss the services available to residents of Montgomery County through JSSA, a nonprofit organization which provides counseling, educational, special needs services, in-home support, hospice and nursing care and social services.

The Montgomery County Council and Radio America have entered a partnership that provides the Latino community with key information on issues and programs. The partnership also provides a forum for residents to express views and ask questions. The partnership includes the weekly one-hour show each Friday on the Washington metropolitan area’s most popular Spanish language station. Lilian Mass is the show’s host.

Each week, the show features guests talking about important issues before the Council and provides information about programs offered by the County to help residents.
