Statement by Montgomery County Council President Navarro on Inspector General Blansitt's retirement

For Immediate Release: Friday, January 25, 2019

From the Office of Council President Nancy Navarro

ROCKVILLE, Md., Jan. 25, 2018—Montgomery County’s Inspector General Edward L. Blansitt, has informed the Council that he intends to retire in July 2019.  First appointed in 2011 and again in 2017, Blansitt worked to review the effectiveness and efficiency of programs and operations of county government departments and agencies; to prevent and detect fraud, waste and abuse in government activities; and to propose ways to increase the legal, fiscal and ethical accountability of government departments and county-funded agencies.

Council President Nancy Navarro made the following statement on Blansitt’s retirement:

“Edward Blansitt has served Montgomery County and its residents with the highest distinction. In 2011 he was unanimously confirmed by the Council as inspector general because of his extraordinary professional background, including his service as deputy inspector general for the U.S. Department of Commerce, and his professional, level headed approach.

“Our county and its residents have been fortunate to have someone with his credentials and professionalism watching over the programs and operations of county government and its outside agencies for nearly eight years.  He has played a pivotal role in enhancing the productivity, effectiveness and efficiency of county government.  All of us have benefited from the quality and integrity of Mr. Blansitt’s work.  We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.

“The Council will immediately begin seeking candidates to serve on the Inspector General Nominating Panel.  This nonpartisan, three- to five-member nominating panel will review applications for the position and submit a list of at least three qualified candidates to the Council, which will ultimately make the appointment. Our goal is to have a new inspector general confirmed to coincide with Mr. Blansitt’s departure.”
