For Immediate Release: Thursday, April 4, 2019
The Montgomery County Department of Liquor Control (DLC) will host two regional Bystander Intervention Trainings for businesses that serve alcohol. The free workshops will be held on Monday, April 8 from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Silver Spring Civic Building, One Veterans Place in Silver Spring.
In addition, there will be an overlap presentation from 12:30 p.m. to 1 p.m. about human trafficking awareness and prevention.
The training is designed to teach alcohol service staff how to respond if they notice behaviors that could lead to or constitute sexual assault and harassment. The instruction also teaches evidence-based strategies to establish a climate of dignity and respect.
According to the U.S. Department of Justice, one in six women and one in 33 men will be sexually assaulted during their lifetime. Additionally, alcohol and/or drug use is involved in 75 percent of sexual assaults.
“Hospitality businesses are the cornerstones of our communities,” said Kathie Durbin, DLC division chief of licensure, regulation and education. “The DLC is committed to doing all we can to keep Montgomery County a safe and enjoyable environment for service staff, residents and visitors.”
The training is paid for through a DLC grant from the National Alcohol Beverage Control Association. Partners include Brown Forman, Alteristic, Chambord Black Raspberry Liqueur and Breakthru Beverage.
Space is limited, and reservations are required for the training. To register, click here.
