ROCKVILLE, Md., June 24, 2019- The Montgomery County Council’s special feature video “Hispanic Heritage Month 2018” has won the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ National Chesapeake Bay Chapter 2018 Emmy Award for “Best Program or Historical Segment: Culture.”
For the last five years, Councilmember Nancy Navarro, who is currently serving as the Council president, has highlighted the contributions and vibrancy of the Latino/Hispanic community in the region during Hispanic Heritage Month through a special commemorative ceremony at the Montgomery County Council. Part of this special ceremony includes the production of a video in which the progress of the Latino community and its impact at the local, national and international levels are highlighted.
In 2018, Council President Navarro and her staff spearheaded this video project and worked with Lilian Mass, the Council’s bilingual communications specialist, and cameraman and editor José Martín Ruiz to detail the history of Hispanic immigration to the Washington metropolitan area. The video emphasizes the contributions made through the arts, music and cuisine.
For 2018, the national theme was “Hispanics: One Endless Voice to Enhance Our Traditions,” which the Council adopted to recognize and celebrate the histories and traditions of the Latino and Afro-Latino community’s rich cultural diversity and influence in music, food, and art.
“Our County is truly a microcosm of our nation’s changing demographics, and it is important to celebrate our shared heritage by recognizing the valuable contributions of the Latino community,” said Council President Navarro, who is the first Latina immigrant ever elected to the Council. “Being able to honor this piece of our diverse mosaic of cultures in this nation, is what makes the United States such a strong beacon of democracy, so I’m delighted that this video won.”
