TOPIC: Bill 14-19, Police – Policing Advisory Commission – Established, would create a Policing Advisory Commission. Councilmember Hans Riemer is the lead sponsor of Bill 14-19. Councilmembers Will Jawando, Tom Hucker and Evan Glass are cosponsors.

The goal of Councilmember Riemer’s bill is to build trust in policing by developing a new community partnership with the Montgomery County Police Department. This new commission will provide an opportunity for community leaders, policy experts and the Montgomery County Police Department to have a constructive and collaborative dialogue about best practices and accountability. The commission will advise the Council and the Police Department on policing matters, provide information regarding best practices and recommend policies, programs, legislation or regulations.

The commission would not have oversight for disciplinary or personnel matters because Maryland law does not allow independent bodies to review personnel information.
