For Immediate Release: Friday, July 12, 2019

The Montgomery County Shady Grove Processing Facility and Transfer Station is now accepting credit cards to pay for tipping fees. Previously, only cash and checks were accepted. The fees primarily impact commercial users with trash loads or yard waste loads of 500 pounds or more.

All major credit cards will be accepted including debit cards, American Express and Apple Pay.

Users may be asked to leave a deposit with their credit or debit card upon entering the scale house. Depending on the weight of the disposed items, upon exiting, users will either be refunded the full amount of the deposit left earlier on the credit card, a partial amount depending upon the weight or will be charged an additional amount based on the weight.

“Accepting credit and debit cards, and payments such as Apple Pay, is a way that we can better serve our customers and make the transfer station operate more efficiently,” said Adam Ortiz, director of the Department of Environmental Protection. “Making disposal of trash and recycling a bit easier is one of our goals and improving customer service is always a goal. This change helps us accomplish both. Reducing the amount of cash transacted is a better situation for all. Whenever we can improve our system, it helps with our ultimate goals of increasing recycling and reducing waste.”

Accepting credit and debit cards will help improve the time it takes for trucks to move through the transfer station. Yard waste that comes across the scales and weighs more than 500 pounds is subject to the fee so using card payments makes it easier for haulers.

The current fee for trash loads exceeding 500 pounds is $60 per ton. The fee for materials delivered for disposal in open-top roll-off boxes (for all amounts) is $70 per ton. The fee for yard waste exceeding 500 pounds is $46 per ton.
