Community Action Board Accepting Applications for Free Advocacy Training Program 

The County’s Community Action Board is now accepting applications for its Community Advocacy Institute.  The Community Advocacy Institute is a free program that will teach residents basic advocacy skills and it provides hands-on opportunities to advocate for important issues in the community.  Since its 2016  inception, 52 residents have participated in the program.

The eight-month program includes hands-on workshops focused on best practices for engaging elected officials using strategies such as storytelling, research, letter-writing and public testimony.  The workshops are led by Community Action Board members and feature elected officials, local advocates and issue experts.  Participants will have the opportunity to develop their own testimony and complete an advocacy project.  To qualify for the program, participants must be Montgomery County residents with household incomes of $55,000 or less.  Additional information about the program and a link to the registration page may be found online at montgomerycountymd.gov/communityaction.  Applications are due by Friday, August 16.

The Community Action Board is Montgomery County’s federally designated anti-poverty group. The board serves in an advisory role to the County Executive and the County Council, and as an advocate for residents with low income. The board provides governance to the County’s Department of Health and Human Services’ Community Action Agency programs, including Head Start.
